内容简介:
The hunters pause and for a moment they face the lions in a deafening, dust-swirling stand-off. Then they advance: with so few prey animals around, the dead zebra is worth fighting for.
This is Europe, 50,000 years ago and life – of a sort – for a clan of our ancestors.
Of course, its leaders understand nothing of the coming Ice Age, but they do know their hunting grounds are now largely barren and they are losing too many brave warriors to the big cats. If only there was another way.
In fact, one man does have an idea. Dhi believes the beasts they seek haven’t been swallowed up by the parched earth but have gone elsewhere: by using the sun and a stick, he can find them. Surely, he argues, where there’s plenty, lions and humans don’t have to fight.
But before anything can be done, he takes a new female and that changes everything.
Wuhn is young, lithe and beautiful, someone any hunter would love to add to his harem. But she is also spirited and that leads to her exploring the great forest near their settlement. She doesn’t return.
Dhi is anguished – but also confused. He must lead his people to safety, but he cannot abandon Wuhn.
Wuhn is lost and goes deeper into the forest. Here, she encounters a band of creatures so similar – yet so different from her own kind: powerful, big-boned Neanderthals. Managing to escape from them, she seeks refuge in the camp of those she does recognise – fellow humans. But her relief is short-lived as she discovers this clan has a problem. Many of their infants are malformed at birth. The males blame the females. They need more, strong females. Wuhn has to stay to breed. All the females in Wuhn’s clan must be taken to breed. They are willing to negotiate with the leaders of Wuhn’s clan, but are prepared for war. And they will win – haven’t they already conquered the Neanderthals?
At last, Dhi makes a decision: collecting his weapons, he heads for the trees.
The Uprights describes what happens.
